The definitive record of the twentieth century's preeminent car builder and racer is now available in an updated paperback edition. It was motoring author Rinsey Mills' passion for AC cars and motorsports history that led to his first meeting with Carroll Shelby. His suggestion that they should collaborate in order to create an accurate record of Shelby's life and achievements at first was rebuffed but later taken up with enthusiasm. This authorized biography is the result. Carroll Shelby The Authorized Biography was a long time in the making, as Mills left no stone unturned in his quest to produce the complete study of Shelby's remarkable life. He carried out extensive research and conducted numerous interviews, fully capturing the narrative of Carroll Shelby within and outside of the automotive racing world his childhood in Texas, wartime tenure with the Army Air Force, and postwar entrepreneurship; his earliest race wins in 1952 and his legendary 1959 victory at the 24 Hours of Le Mans; his monumental release of the first Cobra and the formation of Shelby American in 1962; his historical partnership with Ford that would last for decades; all the way through to Shelby's personal hobbies, travels, and present-day legacy. Fascinating photographs from Shelby's personal collection complete a book whose original hardcover edition was published mere weeks before his passing, making Carroll Shelby The Authorized Biography a magnificent and lasting tribute to one of the greatest automotive figures of the twentieth century.

Carroll Shelby The Authorized Biography Rinsey Mills 0752748346468 Books Reviews

  • To begin this review I'll rate this book @ 5 STARS ! True the print is small but I'm having no problem reading it , to me the print is no smaller than most pocket books. Should note I do wear reading glasses & I'm no " Spring Chicken ". Maybe the small print permits more knowledge to be stored on less pages ? For a lover of Cobras & anything else Shelby especially the " MAN " himself it's already opened up a few unheard of stories I find new to me. Sure , there is a few omissions of really no importance but things like Ted Sutton getting recognized as the man that dropped the 427 in a 289 rolling chassis thus being responsible for building the first 427 Cobra ( CSX2196 ), the stories from Joan Sherman being there at Carroll's side promoting the Cobra from the very beginning while book-keeping , etc, etc & all the others ( & there's many ) that gave their 2 cent's worth to Rinsey. I find this book a very interesting read jam-packed with lots of antidotes from many people who were around Carroll from the very early part of his life to the present. Just check out the Author's Acknowledgements on page 536 & the Forward to the book on page 7 by Edsel B. Ford. The book for me is a long read & of course being a Cobra fanatic you can well imagine my first chapter of choice. But Carroll's story from start to the present is very interesting indeed & if you have followed motor racing you will read of a lot of race drivers & car owners , builders , etc, that intertwined with Carroll's interesting life that you will recognize. It's all here, his childhood, growing up, service life as a pilot, his business's, race car driver, innovator, his ventures, his wives, Africa, the ups, the downs, an incredible story of success, failure & adventure. THANK YOU RINSEY, CARROLL, & ALL THE CONTRIBUTORS TO THIS BOOK - 5 STARS , an excellent addition to your Cobra Library. !
  • I must admit up front that Carroll Shelby was a hero of mine, as I am of an age that allowed me to closely follow the exploits of Shelby and his cars during that magical time in the 1960's.
This is a very thorough and detailed book, in parts, overly so, IMHO, but, in the end, I did not really gain a sense of who Shelby really was. The author notes numerous times that Shelby was not one to reflect much upon the past, and was constantly looking forward, part of the secret of his success. Perhaps that mindset leads to little self analysis, and an ability to shrug off failures and difficulties.
It certainly worked so very well for Shelby and his skilled and dedicated team; problems were there to deal with and overcome, and they usually did, in convincing and winning fashion. I just hoped for more personal insight into what made this automotive legend "tick". There were a number of snippets in the book, but I still wanted more. I may be emphasizing this too much, but since I was very familiar with the Cobra " story" , and the trials and tribulations of the racing teams, I hoped for more on Shelby the individual. Perhaps this is the inevitable outcome of " authorized" biographies.
Also, I believe that a more extensive, and better choice of illustrations should have been expected.
I believe a shorter, and better biography of Carroll Shelby may still be written.
  • I've been very fortunate to have owned a '69 Shelby, given a ride in a REAL 427 Cobra (it was better than sex, I'll NEVER forget it)) and once met Carroll Shelby in person at a "Ride and Drive" event at Ford's proving grounds in Dearborn, MI. (I sold Fords for 25 years) My knowledge of Shelby Mustangs, Cobras, GT40's and all classic 60's Fords is pretty extensive, along with Ford's 1960's "Total Performance" image. I read the book right away, I learned a LOT of little things I never knew, plus clarified & confirmed stuff I did know. It was a pretty good read, but still kinda left me wanting to know just a LITTLE bit more. When you think about it, it is TRULY AMAZING the things and his "car guys" accomplished. Everyone's bucket list should include a ride or chance to drive a 427 Cobra, (it would have to be a replica) Only then, would a person understand what I mean.
  • If you're already a fan of Carroll Shelby or just want to know more about the man and his contributions to auto racing in general and Ford motorsports in particular, this is the book you need to read.
  • First the good stuff. The book was defective with some double-printed illegible pages in the later chapters, and promptly replaced it, even though it was beyond their return policy. Kudos to for their prompt and courteous Customer Service.

Now for the product review. The author is obviously an authority of SCCA racing, as the book delails every race down to each major driver, and almost every pit stop. However, my defination of a biography is a book that reviews a person's life, not the life of their sport or business. Granted, Shelby lived and breathed racing, but the book sorely lacks any of the content of the man's life that any normal biography would contain. I'm only 3/4 of the way through, and I continue to plunge forward only hoping to learn more about the person. This book has been a long, painful journey through the minutia of the history of sports car racing, and I'm only hoping the final chapters will look a little more at the person that the book portrays to document. A lessor reader would have given up hope many chapters ago.

The book also does not read easily, with many gramatical errors and tight fonts. I don't proclaim to be a liturgist, but the grammar errors and comma faults wreck havoc on a smooth reading experience. If the writer would have stuck with the promised subject matter, and been reviewed by a competent editor for gramitical integrity it would have been a little more tolarable.

The book should be retitled "The History of SCCA Racing in the 1960's", featuring the involvement of Carroll Shelby". That would better represent the content to prospective readers. Until a REAL biography of Shelby is written, this one should be passed by.
  • Just what my Nephew anticipated the book to be! Good for anyone interested in his contributions to the automotive industry.
