"For anyone who is a die-hard Star Wars fan, a fan of the expanded universe, or merely a fan of Mara Jade, this is one to add to your collection. This story stars Mara Jade, also known as the Emperor's Hand, whom debuted in the Thrawn Trilogy, and has been a huge EU character ever since. Set primarily after Return of the Jedi, Mara sets out to fulfill her master's last orders as an agent of the Empire. The art work done the time this story came out I was unsure of at first, probably to to the fact that it's petty much outdated, does give a great visual to the story itself. Here, Mara is displayed as a dominant woman, complete with beauty, intelligence, skill, and power. It be great to see her adapted within a live-action film. She is an awesome Star Wars character! I highly recommend this graphic novel!"

  • Hopefully Disney pays attention to the excellent work put out by these two masters of the craft. Mara Jade By The Emperor's Hand is proof positive that good things happen when great minds converge. It saddens one somewhat to know that, so far anyway, neither have been contacted about playing in the new Universe being forged by the Star Wars Creative Team.

While I feel that the artwork was lacking in a few panels, overall I would definitely put this near the top of the Dark Horse efforts. Plenty of detail both to the characters as well as the backgrounds made this one feel as if they actually cared about the story. So often with Dark Horse stuff - especially the later works, I've found the artwork to be yawn-inducing. Too plain. This feeling of "getting it done" rather than "Let's craft the best book yet."

In Mara Jade's case, you already are starting with two of the best franchise fiction writers in the business, coupled with a superb art and lettering team. The quick wit and finesse over brute strength of the character is captured quite well. If you weren't already a fan before picking up this title, odds are you will be by the end of it.

Revealing the specific nature of Mara's relationship with the Emperor - one of Master/Slave - is also neat. And when everything is brought down around her, she doesn't spend much time wallowing in pity. A few regrets, but she continues to move forward, and learns to thrive under her own power.

The Galaxy may be reborn, but I feel there is a place for this title on anyone's shelf.

  • Reading "Star Wars Mara Jade by the Emperor's Hand" along with Timothy Zahn's "Allegience" tie-in novel gives you a great way to know Mara Jade in her pre-Luke Skywalker days.

As the Emperor's Hand, Mara Jade has it all - looks, brains, a personal spacecraft and droid, a power-boost in the Force courtesy of Emperor Palpatine, and every means available to carry out her assignments. When the Emperor dies aboard the Second Death Star, Mara's life crashes and burns while her Force skills atrophy. She's then imprisoned by Palpatine's self-appointed successor, Imperial Director Ysanne Isard, who fears that Mara's insider knowledge of the Empire threatens Isard's powerbase. Mara uses her skill and cunning to escape and flee into outer space to far-off planets, where her adventures continue as she resolves to carry out Palpatine's last two commands Assassinate Dequc, leader of the Black Nebula crime syndicate, and then kill Jedi Knight Luke Skywalker.

To call this tale a page-turner is an understatement. Timothy Zahn and co-writer Michael A. Stackpole do a terrific job of telling her story up to the Emperor's demise and beyond in true cloak-and-dagger style. The artwork is excellent and I love the different costumes that Mara wears in different situations. But I have a few minor quibbles. Mara is supposed to be two years younger than Luke Skywalker, but here she looks 31 as compared to his age of 23. Another thing I noticed is that Mara and Isard have near-identical faces; you'd think they were fraternal twins. Still another problem is the periodic narration. It's told in the first-person up to Mara's capture by Isard, then it disappears during Mara's imprisonment and comes back in the second-person after her escape. It's like somebody either gradually forgot or lost track of the fact that there was supposed to be first-person narration sprinkled throughout the tale, as if these were personal memories recorded by Mara herself.
  • Mara Jade is a powerful character in Star Wars. This graphic novel shows her as the warrioress Palpaltine made her, neither Light nor Dark, when she was still "The Emperor's Hand".

It gave a glimpse of her time in Jabas palace, and her failure to kill Luke. Immediately afterwards she's assigned an assassination from the Emperor. Afterwards she spends rec-time on Empirial Center.

She feels Palpaltines death, all the way from Endor. Shock and grief leave her helpless and lost for awhile. She spends time running, and hiding out. Then she recovers and goes hunting enemies of the Empire.

At the end she's standing tall and strong.
  • It was nice to have a change of perspective with STAR WARS normally you follow the hero this time you followed the villain who becomes an anti hero at the end of the novel. The story takes place during Return Of The Jedi and follows Emperors Hand Mara Jade as she at first tries to assassinate Luke Skywalker only to fail and is given another task while the events of JEDI take place. Once the emperor dies she is tasked to one final mission as an Hand and she will finish it but will she survive.
  • I've read pretty much all of the Star Wars novels which have Mara Jade's character, so it was really satisfying to finally have a foundation for her. This graphic novel is very well written and drawn. As soon as I opened it, I sat down and read it from cover to cover. If you're a fan of the Star Wars universe at all, this is a must-read.
  • MARA Jade has been a favorite of mine for years. This is a fun story and well written and drawn. The Star Wars universe is a better place with her in it.
