Burnout The Secret to Unlocking the Stress Cycle Emily Nagoski PhD Amelia Nagoski DMA 9781984817068 Books Reviews

  • This book is special and important. It's the kind of book you want to give to everyone you know because you know it will make their lives a better place. From understanding the importance of completing the stress cycle, to facing down "Human Giver Syndrome" to making friends with the madwoman we all have in our attic, the Nagoski sisters break down some serious research and make it easy to understand and apply. Please do yourself a favor and read this book immediately.
  • I loved the pop culture references, which added a depth and commonality of them. Pop culture is a product of its times, and our times are, as the euphemism goes, "interesting." The use of pop culture to help figure out our responses is a brilliant short cut. BURNOUT taught me so many helpful things, vivid metaphors that should stick in my mind for when the stress is high and my mind is casting about for a place to ground itself. Although many Star Trek references abound, so do others. So very Darmok and Jalad at Tenagra.
  • I learned a lot about myself and my stress, and finally an understandable way to manage it. This book is realistic and relatable and I know I'll read it multiple times.
  • This is an incredible groundbreaking book, for everyone (if the non-women can get past it being written for women). The first two chapters alone are worth the price of the book, just for all the information on how stress and stressors work in our bodies and how to help our bodies heal. Highly recommended.
  • I loved Emily's first book "Come As You Are" and knew that this one would be a home run as well. She and her sister do a fantastic job of making you feel seen while also giving practical solutions. I recommend this to everyone and plan on randomly leaving it in coffee shops so that someone can happen upon it.
  • Excellent, intersectional lens and approach to self-help with relatable anecdotes and science-based tips to improve your life. I love this book and it has improved my life already.
  • Would highly recommend this to anyone who identifies as female, or knows and cares about someone who identifies as female.
  • Burnout by Emily (PhD) & Amelia (DMA) Nagoski is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in late March.

From page 1, this book is immediately directed toward women, which I initially sorta balked at and felt like I was being given a good-intention, high-volume, New Age talking-to. Written by identical twin sisters (who offer frequent pop culture references, real-talk asides, and emphatically describe things to a reader, as if highlighting concepts with wiggly jazz hands), they define burnout as a mix of prolonged emotional labor, caregiver fatigue, and feeling as though your efforts are not noticed or rewarded. They advise their readers to confront and respond to stressors in a full circle, complete-the-process sorta way, finding what works for you and self-care that works, addressing debilitating self-talk, charting the plus and minuses of a decision that needs to be made, being comfortable with who you are and how you look, shrugging off expectation and nearly unreal societal standards, and seeking & maintaining meaningful connections with others - all with a heavy hand in narrative therapy tactics.

I first read Edward Fitzgerald's celebrated, if controversial, version of Omar Khayyam's Rubaiyat when I happened upon it in my father's extensive library when I was a sophomore at Notre Dame High School. I have since read it countless times, even purchasing over 10 different editions of the widely-read poem, which is arguably the most famous Persian literary work in the world.

While there is much debate about Omar Khayyam's philosophical outlook (is his message Sufi-oriented or existentially hedonistic?), there is no doubting its beauty and its profundity of thought.

"I sometimes think that never blows so red
The rose as were some buried Cæsar bled;
That every Hyacinth the garden wears
Dropt in its lap from some once lovely head

I originally ordered this because I learned about the mysterious case of the Somerton man. "tamám shud" was printed on a scrap of paper found months later in the fob pocket of the man's trousers. The scrap had been torn from the final page of a copy of Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. I thought I would get some minimalistic paper back book but instead got an amazing, beautiful copy with fantastic illustrations."

"Of three study guides I used, this was the 2nd most important. Also, I just finished my exam two hours ago with a total score of 94.8%, so I'll try to summarize what kind of questions I got, as I run through the relevant sections. Also, my test had no chem or physics, there will be no review of those sections. Before I get into the individual sections, I highly recommend you AUGMENT this book with online quizzes/flashcards, and most importantly - the HESI downloadable mobile app. It's very worth the $10-12 for the expanded app. You can do a few questions a day, or sit down for a marathon 100-question session. They've got almost 2000 questions, generated randomly, and it was my #1 resource. Back to this book:

MATH - My score - 100%. Also, it's not all multiple choice like in your practice exams, sometimes you free-write the answer yourself. I skimmed this chapter to make sure I wasn't forgetting anything, but I'm pretty good at basic math, so if you are as well, there is nothing to fear from the HESI. If you are not, then review fractions and ratios - the bulk of the questions looked like - "9:54:: x:96," with some variation. Lots of "express 0.076 as a fraction." One question was screwed up because they didn't put brackets around a section of the algebra equation, but based on the answers I was able to figure out what they were trying to ask. Another word problem involved "a maximum of 25 students to a class, figure out how many teachers...round to the nearest whole #." The final answer was 52.36, and I considered writing "53," since the classrooms had a max, but I went with 52 and got it right. There is a calculator built into the exam, so no need to work on long division.
READING COMPREHENSION - My score - 90%. As expected, 50 questions, spread across about 10 passages. This one's pretty tricksy, there are a lot of questions that have more than one plausible answer. Know how HESI defines a conclusion vs supporting idea vs main idea, it comes up a lot and may differ from how you and I define those terms. There will be some easy questions, but they're more than balanced out with head-scratchers and dead-ends. HESI appears to be sold on the notion of finding the BEST answer, even if it looks wrong, it may still be the best in light of the other answers.
GRAMMAR - My score - 94%. Grammar's not intuitive for a lot of people. If it's not your thing, review the heck out of this chapter. I felt confident, so I spent almost no time here. The exam section is mostly what sentences get wrong, or how to best fill in the missing word given the sentence and context. I didn't get asked once about which word was the "participle" or "misplaced modifier" or "predicate," etc.
VOCABULARY - My score - 96%. BEST TIP - the list in the book is not at all exhaustive, spend time on review sites, make flashcards for the ones you don't know. Also, they WILL ask which word is spelled correctly, so review your spelling if you're not comfortable.
BIOLOGY - My score - 88%. Stupid Krebs Cycle vs. Citric Acid Cycle vs. Calvin Cycle. Know that stuff well. Cellular respiration comes up a lot, and sometimes it's just called "respiration." The other heavy hitters are Mitosis vs. Meiosis, organelles, transcription/translation, and the fabulous phospholipid bilayer. This book does a good job at covering the basics, but you may want to find more info online if you're not totally confident in those processes. Oh yeah, hypertonic vs hypotonic solutions totally showed up.
ANATOMY & PHYSIOLOGY - My score - 100%. Must've lucked out on a few of these. Of 30 questions, joints showed up a surprising amount of the time - synovial joints, joint types, etc. I didn't study individual muscles, but had 3 questions on those. Look for hints in the clue - like when I got: "which quadriceps muscle attaches distally on the left side of the tibia?" I'm totally blank, but one answer is: "vastus lateralis." Lateralis=side, so why not? Score. The review in the book does a good job here. Don't clutter yourself with unnecessary detail. As mentioned, some questions seem hyper-specific before you see the clues within. My 30 questions literally covered all 11 body systems, so review them all.
CRITICAL THINKING - My score - 820/1000. We weren't "graded" on this section exactly, but did receive a score. I read afterward that some schools require a certain score to get in. If that is your school, then good luck. These questions largely involve prioritization/triage knowledge. I had already gotten my CNA certification, and drew on a lot of that knowledge. If you don't have that, read up on patient prioritization and pathology, but, again, only if you need it.

Hope that helps! Study a little bit every day, and keep your flashcards with you, both filled and blank. Good Luck!"

Admission Assessment Exam Review 9780323353786 Medicine Health Science Books Reviews

  • I used this book to study for my HESI A2 test in Illinois. First and foremost, I'll say I LOVE this book. It prepared me well. However, it is a little flimsy for a $40+ price tag. The math section prepares you well, as does the grammar and vocab sections (vocabulary in this book was 100%, exactly what I found on the exam.) A&P could cover a little more, as could Biology. Biology went over mitosis and meiosis, but rather unclear and it didn't call the phases what it asks for on the exam, so learn those from another source (G1, etc.) A&P I supplemented with flash cards from quizlet. Don't be afraid to ask things that aren't in the book. Go online and find the answers. This book gives you the vague overview of what would be on the exam, and it's up to you to fill in the more detailed bits...which is ridiculous. If I'm paying the price of a cheapish textbook ($60 with expedited shipping and it still took two days??) the least it could do was provide more information. The tests, I really enjoyed. It did contain chemistry and physics sections, but I didn't need those. Reading comp was a little wimpy. Honestly, what helped me even more was the android app "HESI A2 Exam Prep" By Pocket Prep, Inc. It's free, although you can unlock a full version for $12 or $13, I don't remember, and the practice tests are awesome. I was terrified to take the HESI and I ended up passing with a 95% composite score. The best thing you can actually do is get this book, get the app, and make sure to take some peppermints and earplugs with you because the clicky-clack of other people pressing mouses and computer keys WILL get on your nerves.
  • I only had to take Chem, Math, Reading Comp, Vocabulary, and A&P on my HESI. Make sure you ask the school who is proctoring the test what sections you need to take so you dont waste time studying a section you won't be tested on. Overall great prep from this manual! There was even a question that was in the Post-test in the back of this study manual that was on the test, word for word! However, while I was well prepared by this manual for every subject, the A&P section needs to be improved. Literally there were questions on my test that the A&P section in this study manual did not even touch on. I was so upset by the piss poor prep of this section because as an aspiring nurse, this is one of the most important sections. I understand that when studying, you have to do your own additional review, which I did. However, it is hard to review so much information of A&P to only be asked 30 questions of it. Yes, the HESI tests on more basic concepts of A&P, but there should have been more info included in this study manual than just primarily the body systems. I had a FAIRLY small amount of questions about body systems and more questions about random topics. For example, I had questions about vitamins and chemoreceptor activation, none of which was covered in this manual. Also, not sure if this is the case with everyone who took the test, but I did not get a Periodic table for the Chem section. Even though I still did exceptional on the Chemistry section, that was very infuriating! In conclusion, I would definitely get this manual for prep in the Math, Chem, Vocab, and Reading Comp. sections. However, I would suggest looking into other study options on top of this manual for the A&P section. Review notes from your A&P classes, go on YouTube and watch how other people prepared for the A&P section, watch Khan Academy videos, go to ReadyfortheHESI.com to explore their A&P section review---while you may have to pay for full access to their review, it could be worth it, also take practice tests online! Remember start reviewing early, a little bit each day and DONT STRESS! This test is generally a lot easier than what people fear. What is meant for you is for you and no test, person, or obstacle is going to stand in your way. Best wishes and God Bless!

Hilarious best friends Cat and Nat created a massive online community of moms by sharing their ultra-real and just a bit R-rated dispatches from the mom trenches. From what not to eat a few days after giving birth (chicken wings) to the most effective ways to dodge post-partum sex, Cat & Nat's Mom Truths shares everything no one will tell you about having kids.

Mixing memoir, humor, and advice, Cat and Nat tell never-before-told stories about the stress, guilt, joy, and laundry (oh the laundry!) of being a mom in their first book. With seven kids between them and millions of fans on social media, they get real about the parts of parenting that somehow don't make the Instagram feed. Sharing their outrageous humor, fearless myth-busting, and genuine comfort, they walk you from pregnancy to the toddler years and beyond. And they dole out ridiculously honest advice, like what you think you need at the hospital when you have your first baby (lip gloss) versus what you actually need (hemorrhoid pillow), and how worried you should really be about germs (less than you are). Fearless crusaders against the perfection myth and all the gluten-free, sugar-free baking it entails, Cat and Nat assure you that you're already doing a great job, making this an essential companion for moms everywhere.

  • I feel bad but I found this book boring as a mom of a baby and toddler. I didn't think it was that funny. I actually skimmed through a few chapters. Sure I had a couple of chuckles and could relate ... but I just didn't vibe with the book. Sure they try to be funny but I always felt like the stories were missing something. Like they didn't go deep enough. I think this would be better for a first time mom perhaps who needs an easy and fast read.
  • OOOHH I am in LOVE with this book! Cat and Nat have done an amazing job putting the #MOMTRUTH out there. I wish this book was around when I had my first child, would of saved me a lot of depression, anxiety, and questions! They do an excellent job putting the brutal honesty yet hilarity out into the world of what it means to be a woman and a mom. Nat's story is so similar to my own that it I thought she had been in my head and telling my story. Every woman should read this regardless if your a mom or not. Hell even men should read this if they want an inside look into what is like being a woman and a mom!!!!
  • I wish I would have had this book before getting pregnant! I struggled through the first year feeling like an epic failure and had this book been available I would have known I wasn't the only mom with these feelings. Cat and Nat's Instastories and FB Lives and the community they strive to build is amazing! You will laugh out loud while reading this... literally! I loved it!!! • Got it for my birthday!! Best. Mom. I’m not so alone. Book. Ever! Can’t put it down. I’m getting sad that I’m almost finished with it cover to cover! I will read it again is the plan. I try not to panic attack awaiting the next follow up book to this...it’s THAT freakin good! I texted my cousin who’s daughter is having a baby soon- I insisted she RUN out and get this book. This book seriously came at a time when I wish I had my own cat & nat to call and talk to you about my parents had both passed and I’m trying to raise a little one ...and wanna be like am I the only one feeling THIS or THAT..and I’m telling you they are like my best girlfriends they just don’t know how they’re the friend in my head like Wendy Williams has been known to say- LOL and I’m telling you this book makes you feel like you’re sitting down talking to your best girlfriends over a café latte and it makes you smile and it makes enjoy reading again and all those long sleepless nights I just tuck in with the book and a teeny book light while rocking in the rocking chair and the time seems to pass and I don’t feel so alone anymore . I’m tellin u- this book has someone done more than brought joy to me, it’s felt like a little life raft as we all tend to feel so alone as new moms!! Mom hood is lonely. And when all ur help and supposed village is non existent- cat & nat are here for us! Ur only regret would be not buying it Already!!! Come to California on tour already ladies!! Luv u!
  • I have been following Cat & Nat for over a year now. They are the most hilarious, down-to-earth friends on the planet. They say it like it is and that is exactly what makes this book so relatable. Nat has said multiple times that the book is written to not be read straight through because it's almost impossible to sit and read an entire book uninterrupted. I was able to stop at the end of a chapter and pick it right back up when I had time. I attempted to be on of those "Perfect Moms" with my daughter and that stopped after her 1st birthday. This book tells you it's OK to fail, it's OK to not be that "Perfect Mom" and there are thousands of other Moms just like you. Follow them on social media for laughs all day long. This book will not disappoint ! Melissa Partsch
  • “Being a mom is hard, & exhausting, & sometimes literally your greatest accomplishment in a day will be getting through that day” Cat & Nat this is spot on! No truer words have I read. This book was everything I thought it would be! Honestly considering this as a baby shower gift. “How come no one warned us about this? How come no one warned us about the isolation and the feeling that well just never figure things out” I honestly could spend all day quoting some of my favorite parts of this book. I’ve highlighted them. Yes that’s right. Highlighted!! Nat you said t best when you wrote “but I’ve also noticed something about dads in general- something I kind of admire. They are simply not programmed to feel parenting guilt of any kind” this is totally accurate. They do not dwell on anything! Mothers beat themselves up continuously. Always saying tomorrow will be better and striving for that. Shit were all on this crazy ride trying to figure it out we need so much LESS judgement!!!
  • OMG this book was so amazing I read it in a day and a half I just couldn't put it down. Super easy to read and for someone who doesn't like to read the chapters are super short I think the longest one was like 4 to 5 pages long!! There is so many amazing things about this book I can't simply pick one but one of my favorites was the connection that Nat had with Olivia and how she helped her through something it's truly amazing!! Or when you both talk about how you met your husbands and how you were engaged Cat's story had me rolling I would have reacted the same way and I have been waiting for a book like this it's full of honesty and truth about all the things no one wants to talk about when you give birth to a baby or even after all that this book truly highlights what it's like to be a mom wife daughter sister and friend totally helped me be able to connect with Cat and Nat on a whole new level. It's soul barring and totally amazing it's something i will cherish forever!!
  • This book was fantastic. I loved every minute of reading this and will be passing it along to other first time moms! Written by two wonderful women who give us a glimpse in to the hectic, insane, infuriating but wonderful life as a mother. While reading it I can hear them as if we are all having a conversation together which makes it so relatable! Can I give it 10 stars?? D

Foreword by Dr. Phil McGraw.

Ask yourself...are you truly who you want to be? Is this the life you really want? Are you living each day as your best self? What can you change today?

How would you answer those questions? Think about your daily life. Are you thriving or going through the motions? Are your days full of work, relationships, and activities that are true to your authentic self, or do you feel trapped on a treadmill of responsibility? If you dream of a better life, now is the time to turn your dream into reality. The tools you need are within your grasp to design a life that is fulfilling on the deepest levels. Best Self will show you how.

Mike Bayer, known to the thousands of clients whose lives he has changed as Coach Mike, has helped everyone from pop stars to business executives to people just like you discover the freedom to be their best selves. By asking them and leading them to ask themselves a series of important but tough questions - such as "What are your core values?", "Do you go to bed each day more knowledgeable than when you woke up?", and "Am I neglecting some aspect of my physical health out of fear or denial?" - he helps them see what their best selves and anti-selves really look like.

As a mental health specialist, a personal development coach, and an all-around change agent, Mike has seen the amazing ways in which lives can improve with honesty and clarity. He understands our struggles intimately, because he's faced - and overcome - his own. He knows that change is possible.

By working through each of the seven SPHERES of life - social, personal, health, education, relationships, employment, and spiritual development - Best Self is an accessible and interactive audiobook that distills all of Coach Mike's wisdom into a compact, focused guide that will ignite anyone's desire for change. Best Self will empower you to embrace your authenticity, acknowledge what is holding you back, and break through to live a passionate life to the fullest, forever.

"With all due respect, this is a decent book but says nothing that hasn't been written about in thousands of other books. You have heard it all before and lets face it, the fact that Dr. Phil is promoting/endorsing it is the reason for the book's success. Spheres of your life, arenas of your life, whatever..same old headings. Again, information and tips are useful but no original thoughts, no "theoretical thinking." What I do not like is the implicit message that you are not good enough as you already are--that you can be better. In other words, I will say to the author--you can be better, you can get a real degree rather than bogus life coach certification which is no substitute for a legitimate graduate degree in psychology."

Best Self Be You Only Better Audible Audio Edition Mike Bayer Phil McGraw HarperAudio Books Reviews

  • I’m not a reader, but I couldn’t put this down and not in the cliche way. Each chapter left me wanting to know the next. I’ve since purchased several copies to give away to family and friends, and even strangers. Coach Mike’s approach to trials and tribulations and the idea of a best self, seems to be a solution for many situations we go through that otherwise lacked something that could be consistent and universal, but at the same time, individualized and specific to the person. I highly recommend this book. It’s also something that you refer back to and reread throughout your life and as there are changes or new challenges so you can keep it and it won’t sit on a shelf forever. It was new territory for me to truly dive into self-reflection, but definitely needed and probably necessary for you too.

“There is a pervasive belief in society that people can’t change, not really. That is absolutely 100% untrue. If people couldn’t change, I’d still be penniless and addicted to drugs. If people couldn’t change, everyone would basically be doomed. I’ve seen people overcome all odds. People change. They did. You can.”

If this doesn’t resonate with you, read it over and over again until it does. You won’t be disappointed.

  • I purchased based upon the positive reviews, which I'm now seriously questioning. I did not find anything in this book that hasn't been said in other, much better written books. The book was average in writing style, long in stories (which I'm not interested in), and very generic in tips. The tips and homework were all common sense ideas that most already do and know about.

I really wanted to like the book and I really was looking for some nuggets, but I found very few. It wasn't horrible (hence not giving it 1 star), but is very generic and average. If you are looking for something deep or something that will be useful to self change or self improvement then I believe you need to look elsewhere. I'm sure in person his coaching probably works, but his methods just simply don't translate into anything useful when reduced to writing without the in-person coaching.
  • "Best Self" is a must read for anyone looking for make any type of lasting change in his/her life. I found it to be extremely helpful. It felt like Coach Mike was taking me on a personal journey of self discovery; his personal and professional anecdotes were inspiring and helped me feel connected. With the guidance of "Best Self", I was able to gain personal insight and make the much needed adjustments in my life.
  • I received this book to review before it is released.

I found this book to be very helpful. There are a lot of different action items that one can take. I chose to do some of them to get an idea of what the book is like, but want to keep the book so I can continue doing some of the other action items as I have time or as I need them.

The few I did really changed my perspective. I like the idea of the Best Self and the Anti-Self. It's not that we are bad people, we just have a part of us that isn't quite so helpful.

I also like the little snippets in Coach Mike's life and his client's lives. Real world examples always help me to understand things better.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone. Even if you aren't into self-help books, toward the end there is a great chapter on setting goals. That is helpful alone.
  • I pre-ordered this book, received it Tuesday (thank you !) and finished it today. In his direct and clear style, Coach Mike provides a roadmap to understanding what makes us tick (both the good and the not-so-good), inspires us to live the “good” and teaches how and when push the “not-so-good” away, and allows us to coach ourselves to a better place. Having a really good life coach in my life on a continuing basis is something I may never be able to afford, but I really feel that Coach Mike is personally with me as I work through the exercises in his book. It makes me accountable and that’s something I really need.

This book is not an ordinary “self book”, it is more of a self help bible to a happier life. I know these things take work, but I feel that I now have the tools to develop better relationships and more fulfillment in my life as long as I stay with the program. Thank you Coach Mike!
  • I have always been a fan of personal growth and this book really BRINGS IT! It does not just help you identify issues, but gives you tools to actually work through them so you can really address items and programs and change them. It allowed me to really take an honest look at myself, and net feel bad about it.... but feel hopeful and positive about making changes.
  • Too often I start a book and get sidetracked along the way not ever completing it. That was not the case with Coach Mike's book. I feel like I am going to be reading this a second time in the near future. He lays out a framework that is easy to understand while also being extremely thought-provoking. I am excited about my authentic future now!
